The Drs. Noodleman answer readers' questions about smart skincare, anti-aging tips, Revercel® products, and more.

Dear Dr. Arlene:
I'm 28 years old with relatively few skin problems. Do I need an anti-aging program? What should it include at my age?
— Chloe M., Cleveland, Ohio

Dear Chloe:
Many patients ask us this question. It's never too early to start an anti-aging skin care program, and by beginning in your 20s, you can prevent more severe problems from developing in your 30s, 40s and beyond. Here are some guidelines:

  • The most important step you can take is to protect yourself from the sun — especially intermittent daily exposure while walking, driving, and even sitting by the window at work or home.
  • Make it part of your daily routine to slather on sunscreen (try Oil-Free Sun Defense Lotion SPF 30) to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, tops and back of the ears, hands, arms, neck, chest, legs, plus feet and toes if you're wearing sandals. Reapply after sweating, washing, etc. Be as diligent during the winter as you are during the summer, as the sun's rays can damage the skin even if it's not a bright day.
  • After that, look for topical antioxidants and products with vitamin C (Vita-C Infusion), as well as alpha-hydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin cells.
  • Finally, remember that the skin is a mirror for your general health, so eat a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water, exercise, get plenty of sleep and above all, don't smoke.

Dear Dr. Rick:
I've read about using pumpkin enzymes for the face and would like to try something this fall. How exactly can pumpkin benefit my skin?
— Cindi M., Beverly Hills, Calif.

Dear Cindi:
Pumpkin is very beneficial to the skin, and fall is a great time to give it a try. Pumpkin contains natural enzymes, which gently dissolve the outer layers of the skin, drawing out impurities, refining your pores, and revitalizing your skin instantly. It's an effective treatment for premature aging, sun spots, clogged pores, and dull, uneven skin tones.

At Age Defying Dermatology, our medical center in Silicon Valley, California, we recommend Revercel's new Warming Pumpkin Enzyme Mask for maximum results. Warming Pumpkin Enzyme Mask pairs vitamin-packed pumpkin peel with purifying mineral clay, a natural, heat-producing mineral that kicks in on application, creating a warm, soothing heat that enhances penetration of the active ingredients.

You'll feel warm and wonderfully relaxed. Infused with jojoba oil, beta carotene, and encapsulated vitamin E, it nourishes and moisturizes your skin, while neutralizing the free radicals that contribute to premature aging. With just one use, you're left with a warm feeling and an incredible glow.

Finally, until December 31, Revercel is donating $1 for every tube sold to help fight breast cancer.

Dear Dr. Arlene:
As the winter winds start to blow and the sun's warmth wanes, do I need to take any special precautions to protect my skin?
— Sarah Rose M., New York City

Dear Sarah:
Protecting your skin in the winter is just as important as in the summer. Sunscreen and potent moisturizers are your best bets.

  • Just because the sun is not as warm doesn't mean it's not doing damage. Even when it's behind the clouds, the rays are sneaking through to damage your skin. That's why it's important to continue to slather on your sunscreen head to toe.
  • Try switching to a creamier moisturizer for an added boost of smoothers and soothers against the winter winds and drying indoor heating systems. Nourishing Body Cream is a good choice.
  • At night, try Revercel PM, the fastest-acting, most potent anti-aging moisturizer available. It works without irritation — a big plus in the winter months — to smooth, soothe, plump, and brighten winter-weary skin. You'll notice a difference almost immediately.
